Freedmen’s BureauThe U.S. Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, was made by Congress to help former black slaves and poor whites in the South after the Civil War. The Freedmen’s Bureau gave food, housing and medical aid, to those in need. It established schools and offered legal assistance. It also attempted to settle former slaves on Confederate lands confiscated or abandoned during the war.

SharecroppingMainly black me, who had nothing & needed a ob. Most of them went to their former owner. They borrowed lad, tools, & animals in exchange for some of the crops. The land owners got around 75% of the profit.

Tenant FarmingMainly black males, who had tools & animals but needed land. In exchange for land, the landowners got around 25% of the crop's profit.

Reconstruction PlansThe process of rebuilding the South during the Reconstruction period introduced a new set of significant challenges. Under the administration of President Andrew Johnson, new southern state legislatures passed restrictive “black codes” to control the labor and behavior of former slaves and other African Americans.
